EN HILLS MEMORANDUM DATE: July 18, 2011 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers Patrick Klaers, City Administrator FROM: Michelle Olson, Parks and Recreation Manager IX(S) SUBJECT: Love INC Weekend of Service (W.O.S.) Background Staff and Council received a letter from Love, Inc. Weekend of Service (W.O.S.) earlier this year (Attached for Council review). The letter asked if the City would benefit from the services that W.O.S. volunteers provide in spring of 2012. Staff had questions regarding types of service and the overall program and contacted Suzanne Hinderscheid, who is in charge of the W.O.S. project to get more information. She indicated the following: • This service project is similar to the North Heights Weekend of Service that occurred in the spring of 2010 and also one that is scheduled to help with the 2011 Celebrating Arden Hills event. In the spring of 2010, we had 4 different groups of volunteers work on park projects. • The big difference between the North Heights project and that of Love INC is that it involves more churches. Some of the churches are: North Heights, Rose Hill Alliance, Calvary Baptist, Faith Christian Reformed, Hope Community Church, Twin Cities Chinese Church, Grace Church of Roseville, Roseville Covenant, etc... • Their main focus is to help beautify our communities by working on public parks or City specific projects, rather than painting or working on private homes. The City has had a positive experience working with North Heights Weekend of Service in the past. The Public Works Department can definitely utilize volunteers for park clean up, garden weeding, painting park amenities, mulching play structures, weeding play structure mulch, blowing /sweeping tennis and basketball courts, making small repairs and other tasks within the park system. 1l Metro- inet. uslardenhills1PR &PWIParks \MemoslCouncil MemosI07182011 Love Inc.doc
