ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION—DECEMBER 19, 2011 5
Councilmember Holmes asked if the drawings presented reflect exactly how the building will
appear.
Allison Kern, representing Walgreen's, stated the architectural drawings are in true color.
Councilmember Holden questioned if the Walgreen's building will be closer to Building 2.
City Planner Beekman responded that the Walgreen's building is eight feet wider so it is that
much closer, but the property lines and all the concrete curbing has not changed.
Councilmember Tamble suggested the two retaining walls be joined in the northeast corner of
the property.
Ms. Kern reviewed the details of the building stating that there are three primary building
materials; a dark red brick, a lighter color brick, and architectural cast stone as an accent on the
top of the building. She added that the brick will be four to six inches deep. The 2009 PUD
approved 99 square feet of wall signage which includes the two Walgreen's words and the two
"W's". The south elevation clipped corner and window panes around the entrance door are vision
glass; the rest are shaded a darker color. Based on concerns previously expressed by Council
regarding the west elevation of the building, Walgreen's is proposing a variation of brick to add
more interest. The architectural casting proposed is a masonry product that is meant to replicate
stone and is used on a lot of the Walgreen's in the area.
Councilmember Holden asked if the Walgreen's building is the same height as the CVS
proposal.
City Planner Beekman stated it is substantially the same height.
Councilmember Holmes stated that she thinks the proposal as presented looks great and should
be allowed to proceed.
Councilmember Werner asked if Arden Pharmacy agreement with CVS is still in place with
Walgreen's.
Ms. Kern responded that she is not privy to that arrangement and does not believe an agreement
had been finalized at the time Walgreen's acquired the property. She stated, however, that
Walgreen's will work with Arden Pharmacy.
Councilmember Tamble asked if the exact location of the monument sign in the northeast corner
still needs to be finalized. He stated he wants to be sure that the placement of that sign would not
conflict with other signs.
Ms. Kern explained that the location in the 2009 PUD is where that sign will be placed.
Mayor Grant stated that if the location of the sign changes significantly, he would like the
Council to be made aware of such a change.
