4EN`HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: June 11, 2012
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
FROM: Amy Dietl, Deputy Clerk
SUBJECT: Cruisin' for St. Jude Fundraiser — Flaherty's Arden Bowl
Backround
As you may recall, the first Cruisin' for St. Jude Fundraiser — Flaherty's Arden Bowl was held
on August 20, 2011. The event, which was held in the parking lot of Flaherty's Arden Bowl,
included a motorcycle ride, live music, and 3.2 beer sales. No issues from last year's event were
reported.
Staff has received applications for this year's event, which will be held on July 14, 2012.
Consideration
Because the event includes live music, Mr. Flaherty has submitted an application for an Outdoor
Concert license. A copy of the license application is attached. City Code requires Council
approval for the issuance of such a license.
Mr. Flaherty is also submitting an application for a Temporary 3.2 Beer On-Sale Only license.
Last year's event brought in approximately 20 motorcyclists. It is anticipated that the number of
motorcyclists will be closer to 100 this year. Two portable toilets will be provided and
Flaherty's has security guards on staff that will be present for the event.
Staff Review
Commercial Building Inspector, Dave Scherbel, has approved the proposed layout for this event.
No permits are required for the tents because they are sma11 pop-up tents less than 120 square
feet in size. The stage height is less than 30 inches so it is considered a platform rather than a
structure and does not require a permit. Seating will consist of folding chairs; no bleachers will
be used so there is no permit required for the seating.
Fire Marshal, Rick Current, also approved the proposed layout for the event with the condition
that a fire extinguisher be present at the food tent. Mr. Flaherty has also been informed tliat he
needs to contact Mike Crider, Ramsey County Health Inspector, regarding the serving of food.
