lt
,-A II )ENr,HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: January 14,2013
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
Patrick Klaers, City Administrator
FROM: Terry Maurer,Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Hand Held GPS Unit Purchase
Background
The 2013 CIP has a $9,500 item in it to acquire a hand held GPS unit (a copy of the CIP
sheet is attached). This unit will be used by Public Works and Engineering to locate
things such as water valves, curb stops and other utility amenities for inclusion in the
City's GIS mapping system. Thus far we have been able to borrow a similar unit from
Ramsey County to use a few times but have to rely on them to download our information.
This is a tool that will get weekly, if not daily, use as we continue to gather GPS
information on any items we spend time locating. In fact, it will get much use during the
US 10/Hwy 96 Grade Separation project this spring as a number of water and sanitary
sewer facilities will need to be relocated by the project.
Attached is a quote from the State contract vendor, Frontier Precision, Inc. The quote
includes the hand held device, software, pole, hard carry case and 12V power adapter.
The quote with sales tax is in the amount of$11,059.42. The quote is slightly over the
CIP estimate of cost. Financing is expected to come from the Water Utility Fund.
Council Action Requested
The Council is requested to authorize the purchase of a hand held GPS unit, software and
appurtenances from the State contract vendor, Frontier Precision, Inc., in the amount of
$11,059.42.
City Council Meeting
C:\Users\sonja.klingberg\Desktop\1-14-13HandheIGPSPurchase.doc
Page 1 of 1
