PTRC/City Council Joint Work Session
Hazelnut Irrigation Project
Cummings Park
BEFORE IRRIGATION AFTER
JOHN:
HAZELNUT IRRIGATION:
The Committee recommends irrigation for both the soccer field and softball fields at Hazelnut and
feel irrigation is crucial to improving turf conditions for the following reasons:
•The City has designated Hazelnut Park as a level 1 park in it's Maintenance Policy(Perry and
Cummings are other two). Level one is defined within the Maintenance Policy as: Highest
level of maintenance is performed at our large community parks and/or athletic complexes—
level one. Turf areas are subjected to frequent and intense levels of use throughout a
majority of the growing season. Commonly associated with athletic field sites programmed
for organized sports. Maintenance at this level maintains the park or facility at a standard
sufficient to ensure a well-kept appearance. Maintenance issues&concerns are given a high
priority. Hazelnut fields(both soccer field and ball field) have heavy use similar to the other
two level parks—Perry and Cummings. Fertilization is not fully effective without a water
source.
•The City and association lost the use of the Sutton Place field at Presbyterian Homes due to
expansion(a field in the same area of the City). The City shared the cost of maintenance of
these fields(staff, outdoor bathrooms, field paint, nets) and with this field no longer available,
this will be a cost saving.
•The North Suburban Soccer Association has committed to an$8,000 donation toward the
irrigation project. They have indicated they would like to increase practices at Hazelnut and
they would like to use both the soccer field and outfield of the ball field for their programs,
especially with loss of Sutton as a practice site. This has been attempted in the past but has
not been effective due to poor turf conditions. Perry Park and Cummings Park have 4 ball
fields and they are all irrigated.
6
