Major Employers Increased Employment
As in most regions, there were fewer new businesses and start-up jobs during this quarter in
the Central region. However, new businesses in food and kindred products, lumber and wood
g P
products, and other local manufacturing created more start-up jobs compared to the previous
quarter.
Major expansions in the large service sector compensated for moderating growth during this
quarter in retail trade, manufacturing and construction. Manufacturing expansions occurred in
Central transportation equipment, rubber and plastic products, and electronic equipment. Major
Region business downsizing eased among services, retail trade and manufacturing companies.
4th Quarter, 1995
Number of Business Establishments
Births Dissolutions Expansions Contractions
Industry No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%)
Agriculture D D D D D D 0 0.0
Mining 0 0.0 D D 0 0.0 0 0.0
Construction 20 1.1 19 1.1 13 0.7 6 0.3
Manufacturing 20 2.0 6 0.6 9 0.9 8 0.8
Trans., Comm., Utilities 17 2.3 14 1.9 5 0.7 D D
Wholesale Trade 10 1.3 13 1.7 D D D D
Retail Trade 45 1.4 44 1.3 14 0.4 15 0.5
Finance, Ins., Real Estate 12 1.1 17 1.5 D D 0 0.0
Services 74 1.9 68 1.7 21 0.5 14 0.4
Public Administration D D 0 0.0 D D D D
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1995 207 1.6 184 1.4 68 0.5 47 0.4 •
TOTAL 3rd Qtr., 1995 349 2.6 135 1.0 72 0.5 78 0.6
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1994 294 2.2 226 1.7 66 0.5 66 0.5
Number of Jobs
Births Dissolutions Expansions Contractions
Industry No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%)
Agriculture D D D D D D 0 0.0
Mining 0 0.0 D D 0 0.0 0 0.0
Construction 38 0.4 5 0.1 154 1.5 78 0.8
Manufacturing 80 0.2 27 0.1 200 0.6 203 0.6
Trans., Comm., Utilities 23 0.3 39 0.5 88 1.1 D D
Wholesale Trade 22 0.3 23 0.3 D D D D
Retail Trade 478 1.0 177 0.4 138 0.3 227 0.5
Finance, Ins., Real Estate 11 0.2 12 0.2 D D 0 0.0
Services 194 0.3 148 0.3 435 0.8 247 0.4
Public Administration D D 0 0.0 D D D D
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1995 867 0.5 431 0.2 1,156 0.6 800 0.4
TOTAL 3rd Qtr., 1995 1,182 0.6 431 0.2 1,141 0.6 1,932 1.0
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1994 927 0.5 471 0.3 1,887 1.0 1,204 0.7
D = Suppressed to avoid disclosure of individual company data.
Central Region Counties: Benton, Cars.
