<br /> During the fourth quarter of 1995, several large retail companies continued to establish large
<br /> stores in various locations of the Twin Cities area. This increased the number of start-up retail
<br /> jobs by 50 percent from the previous quarter; raising the total number of start up jobs in the
<br /> region even with fewer new businesses. With slow new business formation in most other
<br /> regions, the Twin Cities area accounted for two out of every three start-up jobs in the state
<br /> during this quarter.
<br /> Twin Cities Area Major expansion jobs in retail trade, trucking, and warehousing rose sharply with the holiday
<br /> season, but the economic slowdown had adversely affected growth by the large services,
<br /> manufacturing, and construction sectors. Major manufacturing expansions continued among
<br /> 4th Quarter, 1995 industrial machinery and computers, electronic equipment, and scientific instruments.
