Strong business expansion in wood products, recreational
transportation equipment and other durable manufactured products have produced large
numbers of new jobs in these regions. In contrast to the numerous retail and service jobs
created in most other regions, these manufacturing jobs are high-paying and export-oriented,
bringing substantial new revenues and purchasing power into the state. DES reported that the
Regional Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area experienced the fastest wage and salary job growth (3.7
Analysis percent) over the past year when compared to other major Minnesota metro areas.
2nd Quarter, 1995
Northeast Region Greatly Improved on Rate of Start-up Jobs; Southern
Regions Adversely Affected by Economic Slowdown
3
2
Percent of
Wage and
Salary Jobs
1
0.6 0.7
0.4 0.3 0.4 0.4 0.3 0.4
0
Statewide Northwest West Central Northeast Southwest Central Southeast Twin Cities
Region Region Region Region Region Region Area
Northwest and West Central Regions Kept Lead at Rate of Expansion
Jobs Over Four Quarters
3
2
Percent of
Wage and
Salary Jobs 1.2
1.0
1 0.7 0.7
M 4 0.5
0 z
Statewide Northwest West Central Northeast Southwest Central Southeast Twin Cities
Region Region Region Region Region Region Area
•
4
