Surge in Construction Activity Helped Stir Northeast Region
Out of Yearlong Slump
During this quarter, the Northeast region stirred out of a job creation slump and posted the
state's highest rate of start-up jobs and showed an improved rate of job expansion.
Construction, retail trade and service industries were major sources of start-up and expansion
jobs. Within the service industry, tourism-related hotels, amusement and recreation businesses,
non-profits and other membership organizations, and government provided most expansion jobs.
Northeast Despite this recent growth, the BTS concurred with a DES report of little net job growth
Region during the previous twelve months in the Duluth-Superior metropolitan area (Minnesota Labor
Market Review, July 1995). Manufacturing, transportation and communications, and the
2nd Quarter, 1995 financial sector experienced actual job declines, while modest increases occurred in wholesale
and retail trade, services and government sectors.
Number of Business Establishments
Births Dissolutions Expansions Contractions
Industry No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%)
Agriculture D D D D D D D D
Mining D D D D D D 0 0.0
Construction 32 4.1 19 2.4 6 0.8 10 1.3
Manufacturing 15 2.9 D D D D D D
Trans„ Comm., Utilities 17 3.9 16 3.6 D D D D
Wholesale Trade 12 2.5 12 2.5 D D D D
Retail Trade 56 2.4 42 1.8 9 0.4 7 0.3
Finance, Ins., Real Estate 17 2.4 5 0.7 0 0.0 D D
Services 42 1.4 48 1.6 19 0.6 11 0.4
Public Administration D D 0 0.0 D D 4 1.5 •
TOTAL 2nd Qtr. 1995 201 2.3 149 1.7 44 0.5 43 0.5
TOTAL 1st Qtr. 1995 144 1.7 121 1.4 32 0.4 29 0.3
TOTAL 2nd Qtr. 1994 161 1.9 126 1.5 58 0.7 45 0.5
Number of Jobs
Births Dissolutions Expansions Contractions
Industry No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%)
Agriculture D D D D D D D D
Mining D D D D D D 0 0.0
Construction 160 3.6 31 0.7 178 4.0 169 3.8
Manufacturing 26 0.2 D D D D D D
Trans., Comm., Utilities 28 0.5 18 0.3 D D D D
Wholesale Trade 73 1.7 16 0.4 D D D D
Retail Trade 290 1.1 122 0.5 129 0.5 133 0.5
Finance, Ins., Real Estate 43 1.0 6 0.1 0 0.0 D D
Services 141 0.3 72 0.2 395 0.9 157 0.3
Public Administration D D 0 0.0 D D 60 1.0
TOTAL 2nd Qtr. 1995 781 0.7 277 0.2 960 0.8 655 0.6
TOTAL 1st Qtr. 1995 518 0.4 177 0.2 624 0.5 502 0.4
TOTAL 2nd Qtr. 1994 1,121 1.0 342 0.3 1,084 1.0 862 0.8
D = Suppressed to avoid disclovure of individual conipanc data.
Northeast Region Counties.
