lt ,ARZEN HILLS MEMORANDUM DATE: April 30, 2012 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers Patrick Klaers, City Administrator FROM: Michelle Olson, Parks and Recreation Manager 7YO SUBJECT: Purchase of Park Benches Background The City Council approved the addition of a four year park bench implementation plan and included it in the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for the years 2010-2013. The City Council directed staff to select a consistent bench style when replacing or adding benches. The style chosen was the Parkshore Contemporary/Malibu Bench (name depends on vendor). This style is a comfortable design made entirely of recycled materials, including the frames. This is an in-ground design, which makes it very sturdy and maintenance free. The bench is cedar colored with black frames. Staff purchased eight of these benches last year. At the February 21, 2012 Joint City Council/PTRC meeting, goals were established for the 2012 PTRC calendar. One of the goals identified was for the PTRC to recommend locations for placement of the benches along the City parks and trails system. The PTRC recommended bench locations at their April 17, 2012 meeting. A map with the proposed bench locations is included for Council review. There are four existing wood benches in our parks that are in need of repairs. Staff plans on removing these benches in disrepair, replacing them with four of the proposed purchased benches, repairing the benches and installing them in four of the eleven approved locations. Budget The CIP includes $5,000 designated for each year from 2010-2013 from the Permanent Improvement Revolving Fund (PIR). This bench was found at three different manufacturers with Recycled Plastic Park Benches having the lowest price at $408.00 per bench. If ordering ten or more benches, the price goes down to $387.60 per bench. With eleven benches, including tax and shipping, the total purchase price is $4,963.42. Shipping is estimated to be 2-3 weeks from purchase date. Council Action Requested Motion to authorize the purchase of eleven Malibu style park benches in the amount of $4,963.42 from Recycled Plastic Park Benches.
