,!r, <br /> EN HILLS j <br /> MEMORANDUM <br /> DATE: April 30, 2012 <br /> TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers <br /> Patrick Klaers, City Administrator nnnn�� <br /> FROM: Terry Maurer, Public Works Director -'` <br /> SUBJECT: Old Highway 10 Water Main Replacement <br /> Background <br /> In the past 10 days we have had three water main breaks on the pipe along Old Highway <br /> 10 between Valentine Avenue and Lake Valentine Road. Each repair has revealed pipe <br /> that has been "eaten" away by the soils in the area. The water main was installed in <br /> 1998. Since October 2007 there have been a total of 11 breaks in this same section of <br /> water main. Each break that is repaired requires a significant amount of staff resources <br /> and also closing of traffic to that section of Old Highway 10. Given the types of breaks, <br /> there is no reason to believe that the number of breaks in this area will slow down. <br /> Staff will be talking with contractors about providing a quote to replace this, <br /> approximately 1,500 foot, section of water main with plastic pipe which is not susceptible <br /> to being deteriorated by the soils.
