The Public Works Committee, Chairman Lee Starr; Members Duane Long, James
Luban, Ronald Parson, Roger Reiling and Richard Schultek; Council Liaison
Robert Woodburn, meets the first Wednesday every month at 7:30 P.M. in the
Public Works Building (next door to the Village Hall), and is the resident
advisory group for the Public Works Department.
The Public Works Department, headed by Bud Johansen, has five full-time em-
ployees, an on -the -job -training student from Mounds View High School and
two part-time summer employees. These people help keep life running smooth-
ly in Arden Hills - water running in the faucets, sanitary sewers doing what
they're supposed to do, maintaining some twenty miles of roads. The depart-
ment is ready for snow with four plow trucks set to go and one stand-by veh-
icle if needed. Promise is to be careful of our mail boxes, and the reminder
given that cars cannot be parked on the street during snow removal. Inciden-
tally, the winter sanding material used here contains only about 6% salt,
just enough to keep it from freezing in the stockpile.
In addition to the roads, Public Works has 29 miles of water mains, 32 miles
of sewer lines, a 500,000 gallon water tower, a water booster pumping station
and 12 sewage lift stations to worry about. The pumping and sewage stations
are checked every day of the year. Because the lift stations must operate
twenty-four hours, it's not uncommon for Bud or one of his mento be called
out at any hour should the alarm system indicate a malfunction. Genial Bud
and his multi -talented group do a big and efficient job for us ....
HELP WANTED by the Arden Hills Human Relations Commission. This village
committee needs additional members now to help carry on its worthwhile ad-
visory service to Council. "if you wish to serve your community - and who
doesn't?" asks Chairman Dick Ericson, then please call him at 339-7227 or
633-8275. Other commission Members are Linda McDonald, Janet Moore, Doro-
thy Sullivan and George Weiss; Council Liaison, Wm. Feyereisen. Let's hope
next month's Town Crier will include the names of some new members ....
From Lois Weston, Building Coordinator for Community Education at Valentine
Hills School: "Our school district (#621) has adopted the Community Educa-
tion concept, which basically means people of all ages using their neighbor-
hood schools for enrichment in educational, recreational and/or social ac-
tivities. This is one way for all to keep growing in body and mind, getting
more involved in school, community and neighborhood affairs, while at the
same time utilizing available facilities. Most buildings are available any
time after school hours, unless a school -related activity is scheduled. To
make the necessary arrangements, call Mounds View District Service Center,
636-3650 and ask for the Community Education Department."
What Price Vandalism? Although we have been fortunate not to experience
this problem frequently in Arden Hills ..... An unofficial estimate of the
cost of removing the graffiti on the new No. 8 Lift Station building at
Hamline and ingerson Road is about $200-300 ..... Replacing the coin-oper-
ated clocks on the lights at the Mounds View Tennis Courts that were stolen,
approximately $800 John Buckley reports neighbors adjacent to rec-
reation areas have promised to keep an eye on things and report anything
untoward ....
