______________________________________________________________________________ <br />City of Arden Hills <br />City Council Work Session for January 19, 2016 <br />P:\Planning\Planning Cases\2015\PC 15-021 - Zoning Code Amendment - Outdoor Display and Sales\Memos_15- <br />021 <br />Page 1 of 3 <br />DATE: January 19, 2016 <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers <br />Sue Iverson, Acting City Administrator <br />FROM: Matthew Bachler, Senior Planner <br />SUBJECT: Outdoor Display and Sales Zoning Regulations <br />Background <br />The City is currently reviewing the use of outdoor display and sales areas in commercial districts <br />and considering whether the Zoning Code should be updated to further regulate these activities. <br />At the City Council Work Session on October 19, 2015, staff presented initial recommendations <br />for regulatory standards that could be added to the Zoning Code. The City Council directed staff <br />to complete further work on display area dimension standards, the types of products that could be <br />displayed, and screening from residential properties. <br />Discussion <br />Dimension Standards <br />At the City Council Work Session on October 19, 2015, staff presented the following <br />recommendation for permitted outdoor display areas: two percent of the floor area of the <br />principal building or 300 square feet, whichever area is greater. The City Council directed staff <br />to establish an overall cap of 1,000 square feet for display areas. The dimension standard has <br />since been revised to read as follows: <br />1.The total display and sales area shall be determined based on the following formula: <br />a.For properties with a principal building of 15,000 square feet or less in size, the <br />permitted display and sales area shall be a maximum of 300 square feet. <br />AGENDA ITEM – 1C <br />MEMORANDUM
