MINNESOTA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION <br /> What ' s your vision ? <br /> First Steps <br /> In Building Your Foundation <br /> The following are possible first steps in creating a community or school foundation in affiliation <br /> with an existing community foundation like Minnesota Community Foundation. <br /> 1. Initial interested parties meet with a Foundation representative to discuss your community <br /> and options for creating a charitable fund or foundation. Additional meetings are held to <br /> inform additional residents and community groups,ascertain interest in creating a local <br /> foundation,and identify potential founding board members. <br /> 2. Establish an Advisory Board of Directors,and committees to address Governance, <br /> Visibility,and Fund Development. At the time you begin Grantmaking,you will add that <br /> committee if not already in place. <br /> 3. Complete fund agreements with the foundation. <br /> 4. Write Governing Guidelines. <br /> 5. Create key messages,general brochure,and start-up materials. <br /> 6. Outline 1-3 Year Asset Development Plan,e.g. <br /> a. Initial operating and capacity-building funding <br /> b. Individual donor prospects <br /> C. Business and foundation prospects <br /> d. Professional advisors (attorneys,CPAs, financial planners, bankers,insurance <br /> advisors) <br /> e. Constituent,community,social,and professional groups <br /> f. Endowment and/or special project campaign <br /> g. Bequest society <br /> h. Visibility-building grantmaking <br /> i. System for tracking prospect/donor lists and contacts. <br /> 7. Outline 1-3 Year Visibility Plan,e.g., <br /> a. Key messages and case statement <br /> b. Brochure(s),leave-behinds,bookmarks,flyers <br /> C. Articles and/or ads in newspapers and newsletters (ways to give,donor and <br /> feel-good stories,quotations) (vendors may place ads at no charge as public <br /> service announcements) <br /> d. Web site <br /> e. Radio,television/cable interviews,shows,ads <br /> f. Local annual report and/or recognition ads in newspaper <br /> g. Presentations to groups (sample speech,presentation materials) <br /> h. Presentations to individuals(sample script,presentation materials). <br /> i. Cultivation of advisors (brochure for them to give to clients, memorial <br /> envelope for funeral homes). <br /> 8. Launch to targeted audiences and the general public. <br /> 9.
