REVIEW OF STYLE AND ARCHITECTURAL SCHEMATIC DESIGN OF BUILDINGS FOR KELLER
REGIONAL PARK •
Tim MclLwain from HCM Architects presented three different design concepts for Keller Regional Park. He
stated that Keller Regional Park is urban in nature and unique in layout in that it is really several smaller park
areas strung together. The areas of the park are: Spoon Lake, Keller Island, Lakeside, Lower Keller,
Golfview, Roselawn and Round Lake. The Keller Golf Course Clubhouse is a commanding presence at the
park. It was built in the cape cod style with a structured and symmetrical fagade.
HCM has designed restroom buildings and small (50 capacity), medium (75 capacity) and large (125
capacity) picnic shelters and suggested using similar materials as the Clubhouse such as stone base, wood
siding and 3-tab shingles. Using design elements similar to the Clubhouse and the Arcade Street bridge in
the park will help tie the park and golf course together, even though they are separated by Highway 61. A
parkway concept for Highway 61 with lower speed limits would also help integrate the park and golf course.
HCM designed modular shelter components that can be tied together in different ways to accommodate
different capacities such as straight line, "L" shaped and "L" shaped with a fanned connector that would
double as a serving counter. The plan includes building 5 small, 2 medium and 1 large shelter at Keller
Regional Park and the shelters are planned to be built over two years'time. The gabled but design carries
over to the restroom buildings as well. The restroom building may also include stone walls for seating and a
family gathering spot.
HCM will come back before the Commission to present master plan drawings.
Jonathan Kusa suggested adding fire pits near shelters. The fire pits could be raised to limit fire size. Keller
Island would be the best place for a fire pit. Because parks are not patrolled, a fire pit could be a danger if
the fire were too close to a structure or if the fire got too big. •
Phil Jenni complimented Mr. MclLwain on the design concept and the modular approach that was presented.
It was the consensus of the Commission to support the design concept.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Mack reported that the Gustafson Phalen Arena rededication on February 10t'was very well attended.
He stated that concession area was named "Lou's Warming House" in honor of Lou Cotroneo.
Mr. Mack also stated that there are no changes to what was proposed in the 2007 CIP, which was submitted
in 2006 as part of the two-year budget process.
REPORTS FROM CHAIR AND OTHER COMMISSION MEMBERS
None.
ADJOURNMENT
Upon appropriate motion, the meeting adjourned at 7:30 PM.
Vicki Dahlquist
•
2
