Michelle Olson
Dom: Michelle Wolfe
nt: Friday, April 14, 2006 4:18 PM
o: Tom Moore
Cc: Michelle Olson; Schawn Johnson
Subject: Disc Golf and Dog Parks
When PTRC presented their Vision they mentioned both of the above. I know you said the
committee has done a lot of research, but for my own background I contacted my old
stomping grounds because I knew we had a disc golf course and had researched the dog park.
Below is the response from the City Administrator.
"The disc golf was put in primarily by volunteers, it was volunteer designed as
well. We supplied capital costs for the concrete and baskets and I'd guess we spent under
$5,000. However, now that we are redoing Oakwood Park we are redesigning the course and
it turns out that in my opinion it was very poorly designed the first time. . .used too much
of the park needlessly. . .although that is probably because we didn't care about Oakwood at
that time so they probably thought they could use the whole thing. Among the costs,
however, ongoing litter and tree damage is kind of a big deal.
On the dog Park there is a town in Oregon that has 3 dog parks and last year they
closed one down to totally reconstruct it due to over use, damage and had to reconstruct
the park so I think costs are under estimated on those as well. We don't have good Vs I
don't think and have estimated something in the $10-$20,000 range for fencing and the
like. We have said it has to be completely volunteer generated and fund raised before we
will consider it.
There is an extensive network of dog park enthusiasts as well as disc
organizations. . .google them both and you will be amazed. I have a bunch of stuff I could
end you on the disc stuff but it would be more educational if you just surfed for a
uple of hours. "
Also - Schawn had a done a little follow-up as well which I believe he forwarded to you.
My hope is that this information could be added to that already done and be helpful to
staff and the committee. I saw the item was on the agenda which reminded me to forward
the info to you.
Michelle Wolfe
City Administrator
City of Arden Hills, MN
1245 West Highway 96
Arden Hills, MN 55112
Office: (651) 634 5127
Cell: (612) 716-3295
1
