After inspecting the manhole and adjacent pipe,
it was determined that the storm sewer manhole had failed causing the adjacent ground to erode
into the system causing the sinkhole. The existing storm sewer carries runoff from catch basins
located in Amble Drive through a pipe located in a 10’ drainage easement to Karth Lake
(Attachment C). Due to the slope of the yard, proximity of an existing retaining wall, and
equipment required to access the site, staff contacted Valley-Rich to provide a quote to complete
the repairs.

Discussion

Valley-Rich provided a not to exceed bid of $8,250. Public Works staff will work with the
homeowner to complete any restoration work in the spring. Staff received approval from the
City Council for emergency repairs due to the location of the hole (rear yard) and to prevent
additional damage due to the proximity of a retaining wall. The work was scheduled for March
1st but was delayed to March 8th due to a snowfall event.

CONSENT ITEM – 5G

MEMORANDUM
