ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL WORK SESSION – JUNE 26, 2017 6

Councilmember Holden stated she also would like the Council to look further into the finding
that certain zoning areas do not match the purpose statement.

Councilmember McClung stated he too would like to review the purpose statements in
comparison to what is actually thriving currently and potentially amend the Comprehensive Plan
if necessary.

Mayor Grant asked Senior Planner Bachler if he understood the direction the Council had
provided.

Senior Planner Bachler stated the general direction was that the Council supported creating a
separate zoning district exclusively for Bethel and Northwestern. The Council had interest in
using the term “college office” but that work needed to be put into the definition of that
terminology. He also stated it needed to be determined if the City should develop specific
Conditional Use Permit criteria for the “college office” use to provide more control over the
nature of the “college office” use. He also indicated staff would research what other communities
have done in terms of restricting that use.

Mayor Grant stated that the universities have indicated they are growing and that the City wants
to protect its businesses and remain fiscally sound, which speaks to the City’s mission statement.

2. COUNCIL/STAFF COMMENTS

None.

ADJOURN

Mayor Grant adjourned the Special City Council Work Session at 6:56 p.m.

__________________________ __________________________
Julie Hanson David Grant
City Clerk Mayor
