Joynes, Sr., City Administrator

FROM: Sue Polka, Public Works Director/City Engineer

SUBJECT: Request for Stop Signs at Chatham Avenue and McCracken Lane

Requested Action

Authorize the Public Works Director to have stop signs installed on northbound and southbound
Chatham Avenue at the intersection with McCracken Lane.

Discussion

Staff received complaints regarding the uncontrolled intersection at Chatham Avenue and
McCracken Lane. There is a school bus stop located at this intersection and the concern was
with cars illegally passing school buses with disregard for the children waiting at the stop. The
complaint was brought forward by a resident as well as by the Transportation Supervisor at
Mounds View Public Schools.

In order to determine if stop signs should be installed, an intersection study was completed by
WSB (Attachment B). The intersection was evaluated for all-way stop control based on the
Minnesota Manual of Uniform Traffic Control devices. The criteria looked at include crashes,
vehicular volumes, pedestrian and bicycle volumes, vehicular speeds; and sight distance. The
study concludes that although an all-way stop is not warranted, stop signs are recommended for
northbound and southbound Chatham Avenue.

Attachments

1.
