DATE: October 16, 2017

TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
William S. Joynes, Sr., City Administrator

FROM: Sue Polka, Public Works Director/City Engineer

SUBJECT: Variable Speed Signs

Discussion

In June of 2017, the City Council approved the removal of the variable speed signs and
installation of school zone signs adjacent to Valentine Hills Elementary School. The purpose of
this item is to discuss a location to re-install the variable speed signs that were removed.

Staff discussed several locations including Old Hwy 10 just south of 694, New Brighton Road
north of Stowe, Ingerson Road near Fernwood, and Hamline Avenue south of Highway 96.
Some of these areas are problematic due to tree cover (the signs are solar powered) and
avoidance of residential yards. In discussions with Deputy Sheriff Mike Casey, he suggested the
following locations:

• Hamline Avenue, south of Highway 96
• Old Highway 10 in the vicinity of Parkshore Drive

AGENDA ITEM – 1E

MEMORANDUM
