City of Arden Hills
Economic Development Commission November 1, 2017

MEMORANDUM

DATE: November 1, 2017 EDC Agenda Item 4.A

TO: Economic Development Commission Chair and Commissioners

FROM: Matthew Bachler, Senior Planner

SUBJECT: 2017 State of the City Review

The State of the City was held this year on September 28th at the Tavern Grill restaurant and on
October 3rd at City Hall. Two events were held so that one could be scheduled on a weekday
morning to maximize business turnout while the second could be held on a weekday evening and
be more convenient for residents. Councilmembers presented on the TCAAP redevelopment
project, local transportation and development projects, and parks and trails. A representative
from the Minnesota Department of Transportation provided information on road improvement
projects scheduled for 2018 and 2019.

The Tavern Grill event was attended by approximately 50 people. Of this total, at least 8
individuals that signed in were representing local businesses. The City Hall event was attended
by approximately 20 people. In comparison, the 2016 State of the City morning event at
Flaherty’s Arden Bowl was attended by approximately 70 people.

Staff has not received all of the invoices for the events so the total cost is not yet known. The
estimated cost of both events is approximately $950. The cost of the 2016 morning event was
approximately $1,550. The City had budgeted $2,000 for the events in the 2017 budget.

Staff is requesting that Commissioners who attended the event provide feedback on the program
to be used for future event planning.
