<br />AGENDA ITEM – 1B <br /> <br /> MEMORANDUM <br /> <br /> <br />DATE: January 22, 2019 <br /> <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers <br /> Dave Perrault, City Administrator <br /> <br />FROM: Julie Hanson, City Clerk <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Tobacco Discussion <br /> <br />Budgeted Amount: Actual Amount: Funding Source: <br /> N/A N/A N/A <br /> <br /> <br />Council Should Consider <br /> <br />Providing direction pertaining to potentially increasing the age to 21 regarding tobacco purchases <br />and/or regulating the sale of flavored and/or menthol tobacco in Arden Hills. <br /> <br /> <br />Background <br /> <br />At its August 20, 2018 work session, a representative from the Association for Non-Smokers <br />MN provided a presentation to the Council regarding the Tobacco 21 initiative. At its October <br />15, 2018, work session, the Council accepted comment from the tobacco vendors. The Council <br />then provided an additional option for public comment during a public hearing on November 13, <br />2018. <br /> <br />The Council directed staff to place this item on a future work session in order to further its <br />discussion prior to making a decision. Attached as Attachment A is an updated list detailing the <br />status of cities that have already taken certain action, those that are considering doing so, and <br />those that have no flavor regulations and the sales age remains at 18. Text in red denotes <br />changes from information provided to the Council at its November 13, 2018 meeting. <br /> <br />Should the Council wish to support the implementation of tobacco regulations in Arden Hills, a <br />public hearing and ordinance amendment would be required. <br /> <br /> <br />Attachments <br /> <br />Attachment A: List of cities
