ARDEN HILLS PLANNING COMMISSION – October 9, 2019 5 <br /> <br /> <br />Chair Gehrig invited anyone for or against the application to come forward and make comment. <br /> <br />There being no comment Chair Gehrig closed the public hearing at 6:44 p.m. <br /> <br />Chair Gehrig opened the floor to Commissioner comments. <br /> <br />Commissioner Zimmerman asked if the building had sprinklers or fire proof doors. <br /> <br />Planning Consultant Kansier reported the fire and building codes do not require the building to <br />have sprinklers. <br /> <br />Community Development Manager/City Planner Mrosla explained the Fire Marshall had <br />reviewed and approved the proposed plans. He noted additional alarm systems were added to the <br />building for safety purposes. He commented further on the doors that served the building. <br /> <br />Commissioner Zimmerman stated he was concerned students would be in this building and <br />wanted to be assured it was safe. <br /> <br />Planning Consultant Kansier commented staff was also concerned about this and noted the <br />Building Official and Fire Marshall had taken a special look at this building. She indicated fire <br />rated walls had been installed and all doors opened outward to allow students to exit the building <br />quickly. <br /> <br />Commissioner Wicklund asked if a Phase I or Phase II environmental assessment was <br />completed on this building by the school district. <br /> <br />Planning Consultant Kansier deferred this question to the applicant. <br /> <br />Commissioner Wicklund questioned if the City would be responsible for any harmful toxins <br />that could impact staff or students. <br /> <br />Planning Consultant Kansier reported the City would not be responsible. <br /> <br />Commissioner Wicklund inquired if the school district asked for the 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. time <br />period. <br /> <br />Planning Consultant Kansier stated the school asked for an 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. time frame <br />and staff extended this timeframe slightly. <br /> <br />Commissioner Vijums believed the school was making a logical choice moving the weight <br />room to a new space and he supported the requested Interim Use Permit. <br /> <br />Commissioner Jones asked if the building would have to be brought up to code to meet heating <br />and cooling requirements. <br /> <br />Planning Consultant Kansier stated it was her understanding the applicant would be bringing <br />the building up to code to meet all applicable building requirements.
