CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: November 19, 1997
TO: Parks and Recreation Commission
1,J
FROM: Cindy S. Walsh, Parks and Recreation Director LS
SUBJECT: November Agenda Report
Gateway Gardens
I have had some discussions with residents who are interested in forming a group to plan for
planting a variation of perennials and annuals in the gateway gardens. Planting perennials in a
few gardens would add more variety. I am curious what the Commission members think of the
idea and if anyone is willing to help with the plan.
Facility Needs Study Update
The Mounds View School District and the Cities of Arden Hills, New Brighton, Shoreview, and
Mounds View worked with the youth associations in our area to develop a facility needs
assessment. The main deficiency in our area is a tournament type facility that can be used by the
Cities and the associations during the week and weekends. I have attached a copy of the final
document. There was also a need for additional gym space and a competitive swimming facility.
We will discuss the study and what the next step is at the meeting.
Task Force Updates
The Highway 96 Task Force has finished meeting. They will be presenting their
recommendations to the City Council on December 10. Don Messerly served as the liaison from
this Commission. He will be giving the Commission a report on the final recommendations that
will go to the City Council.
The Tony Schmidt Park Task Force has met three times. Jim Johnson will be giving a progress
report.
1998 Goals/Projects
The City Council would like the Commission to discuss what projects they would like to under
take in 1998. If Commissions do not have specific projects that they can be involved in, they
may become a task force. The Council does think that this Commission has projects that they
have successfully completed in the past and can participate in the future. Please consider what
these projects might be so that we can discuss them at the meeting.
Park Fund Spending Plan
The Commission has begun to set priorities for trail and park development. This may be a
40 project for 1998 that should include putting cost estimates together with the projects.
