CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
• MEMORANDUM
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
DATE: April 12 , 1991
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: John T. Buckley, Parks Director
SUBJECT: Park Development
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Comprehensive Plan for the Arden Hills park system was written
in 1973/74 with input from City Council, Parks and Recreation
committee and Parks Director John Buckley. The main objective of
the Plan was to coordinate the acquisition and development of parks
in each neighborhood within the City. The standards used to
develop the City park system were:
- parks be located in each neighborhood within 1/3 mile of
homes.
develop a pedestrian trail system throughout the City that
• would enable individual mobility without using busy streets.
The general guidelines for the development of neighborhood parks is
outlined as Exhibit A.
The acquisition of the park and trail system has been completed
with just two exceptions:
acquisition of more park land in the Round Lake neighborhood.
acquisition of the last section or tract connecting Royal
Hills Drive to Colleen Avenue (John McClung property) .
ARDEN HILLS PEDESTRIAN TRAILS
Arden Hills ' residents have placed a high value on the City' s trail
system. This value was demonstrated by the response from three
City-wide surveys.
1973 - 73% of respondents ranked trails and natural areas as
1st or 2nd in their priorities.
1985 - 87% of respondents stated they have used the parks/trails
1990 - 73% of respondents stated they frequently/occasionally
• use the parks and trails.
