.
CITY OF ARDEDT iiII,IS
y1u,;C 1 lul
L1ATE: SeptecnbPx 14, 1992
TO: Parks and Recreation Board
FROM: Cindy Severtson, Program Supervisor
SU&TDGT: SafetY Camp
I am very pleased to announce that the first Youth Safety Camp was a
huge success. I continue to receive phone calls praising the program.
The camp ended on Pugust 19 with a barbze and program for the 153
participants and their families. There were approximately 450-500
people who attended this closing program.
We received a$2,000 grant from the Minnesota Dezt of Health to
give free bike helmets to all participants. Participants also received
a packet of information on various safety issues to take home and
discuss with their parents.
. Highlights from the two days of camp included: the Sfioke House which
simulates being in a house on fire and forces those inside to find
alte.rnate escape routes, John Dooley the weathex man at KSTP 5 and his
presentation on weather safety, the canine demonstration and the arrival
of the helicoptex carrying Sinokey the Bear. Apparances were also made
by McGruff the Crme dog and Sparky the Fire dog.
The participants were divided into six groups. Each group was lead by a
volunteer from the Lake Johanna Fire Departnzt, Minnesota Highway
Patrol or the Ramsey County Sheriff's Depart-ment.
The program was organized by Pam Kight from the Ramsey County Sheriff's
Dept., Margaret DuCharme-Johnson,Altexnative Transportation Coordinator
in Shoreview, and myself.
The attached page includes a list of presenters and sponsors.
Although extxemely time constnning to organize, the camp is a very
worthwhile and fun event for the children. I am planning to make Safety
Camp an annual event in Arden Hills.
CLS : rk
Attac,ime.nts
\
