fast enough. Fair well old bridge.
Thanks to Collins and all the others who fought the good fight. The Friends only
wish you had succeeded.
Extraordinary photos "A unique historical essay on the changing landscape of one of America's
greatest rivers."
"Premier photographic documents of the nineteenth century Midwestern land-
scape."
"Truly extraordinary"
All this...and open to the public for viewing at the Ramsey County Historical
Society, north lobby,Landmark Center. What these quotes describe is a simply
wonderful exhibition of photographs taken between 1883 to 1891 by Henry P.
Bosse,a Draftsman for the U.S.Corps of Engineers. The blue cyanotypes include
images of a pre-industrialized St.Paul and Minneapolis.
The exhibit captures the efforts to transform the Upper Mississippi River from
a natural river into a controlled navigational channel. From the initial steps of
cutting brush and quarrying rock to completed wing dams, the photographs
illustrate the process of molding and shaping the Mississippi as we now know
it. The photos depict steamboats, log rafts, wagon bridges, dredges and other
• working boats along with the frontier character of the towns perched along the
banks.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Call the Ramsey County Historical
Society for more details at 222-0701.
Membership renewal Spring is more than a time for tulips, cleaning up the yard and getting out the
bike.
