. Hazelnut. We no longer allow sledding on the hills surrounding the
hockey rink due to the dangerous conditions. We have had several
accidents in this area.
We reopened Valentine Park this year after closing last winter. The
attendance was strong with 605 total skaters. This is an increase of 369
from 1998/1999.
II. Overall
We had a superb outdoor skating season. Our overall numbers went from 2,795 skaters
in 1999/2000 to 5,078 skaters in 2000/2001. This is an increase of 2,283 skaters. I had
14 responsible rink attendants and had very few problems filling all shifts. There are a
few issues I would like the Parks, Trails, and Recreation Committee to consider:
1. We have typically closed rinks around February 11'h for various reasons.
I did have a resident request that we consider staying open one week
longer through President's Day.
2. Bethel broomball has typically rented our rinks from 8:30-10:30 p.m.
Monday through Thursday for 4-5 weeks. I am proposing that we only
allow them to use rinks until 10:00 p.m. We did receive complaints from
neighbors at Cummings and Hazelnut in regards to the 10:30 p.m. time.
3. At our last Parks, Trails, and Recreation Committee meeting, a concern
was brought up in regards to broomball players and whether we should
allow them to use our rinks. I have talked with various cities on this
subject and would like to discuss this with the committee.
