Parks, Trails & Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes April 18, 2023 Page 7

Chair Hinton noted this was something they talked about last year and everyone was in favor.

Committee Member Jacobson asked if there would be a designated mentor, or would they just
come to the meeting and engage in whatever is going on.

Council Liaison Rousseau thought it would be helpful to have an informal mentor, someone to
take them under their wing and have a connection.

Committee Member Kelliher wondered who would be responsible for recruiting the individual.

Council Liaison Rousseau said there is a Youth in Government organization at the high school
they could reach out to, and they could talk to someone at Bethel. She didn’t know if the right
person would be the Communications Coordinator or someone else on staff.

Recreation Supervisor Johnson said it would depend on how much the committee wanted to be
involved in picking the person, or helping to promote it.

Committee Member Kelliher stated that he liked the idea but he felt the committee shouldn’t be
involved in deciding who gets the position. He felt it should be established by someone on Council
or staff.

A vote was taken. The motion carried unanimously.

6. NEXT MEETING

H.
