There are a number of trails that people have made
through the woods at Hazelnut Park. They are more
commonly used in the winter when they’re easy to see
and people are less concerned about ticks and poison
ivy, but some people use them year-round. This is
particularly true of adolescents who decide to go off to
build forts when they’re bored.

I’d like to make some of the well-worn paths into “Unofficial
Trails,” bordered by logs and/or rope and maintained by
volunteers. I’d like to have the trails clearly defined for a number
of reasons:

● to allow visitors to get up close to nature in a way that’s
hard to do on the paved trails, particularly for viewing spring
ephemerals,
● to encourage
visitors to stay on the
trails, particularly if there
was some signage,
● and because it will
be difficult to find the
current, compacted
paths once the young
buckthorn is removed
while that area is being
restored in coming
years
