AGENDA ITEM — 3F
'It
,ARZEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: December 18, 2023
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
Dave Perrault, City Administrator
FROM: David Swearingen, P.E. Public Works Director / City Engineer
Lucas J. Miller, Assistant Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Designating Checkerboard Park
Budgeted Amount: Actual Amount: Funding Source:
$0 $1,600 (for Park sign) PIR - Parks
Council Should Consider
Council should consider Designating Certain City -Owned Property as "Checkerboard Park".
Background/Discussion
On December 20, 2010 the City Council adopted Resolution 2013-009 authorizing the
acquisition of property located at 3151 Lake Johanna Boulevard referred to as the "Triangle
Parcel". On May 28, 2013, City Council gave direction regarding development of the triangle
property which included installation of a gateway sign, irrigation, landscaping and a game table
with checkered board. On March 21, 2023, the Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee motioned
a recommendation that the City Council officially designate the City -owned property as
"Triangle Park". On October 23, 2023 the City Council Tabled the agenda item that included a
Resolution to designate the name "Triangle Park" and with the motion requested the PTRC
suggest another name. At the November 14, 2023 PTRC meeting, the commission motioned to
recommend the name "Checkerboard Park".
PTRC chose the name from one of the area's features which is a picnic table with a checkerboard
on it. They also discussed the idea of adding more of these tables to this space and potentially
hosting checkers or chess tournaments.
The attached Resolution 2023-051 designates the City -owned property as "Checkerboard Park".
Given Council direction, staff will bring the resolution forward for adoption at the next available
regular meeting. If Council adopts the resolution, City staff will order and install such signage on
the property as needed to reflect this designation, and to take such other action as needed to
update the City's official website and publications to reflect the same.
