CITY COUNCIL REPORTS <br /> <br />Council Member Grant commented on two traffic incidents at Old Snelling and <br />Bethel College, one in which Council Member Grant personaJly witl1essed. Both <br />incidents were serious driving infractions that could have resulted in serious injury <br />or dcath. Council Member Grant had discussed both incidents with Bethel's Vice <br />Presidcnt of Campus Services, and he indicated comments would be made at the <br />Novernbcr 25, 2002 Council Meeting and as such, would be recorded as part ofthe <br />public record. Council Member Grant indicated that his comments are not <br />intended as a negative reflection on Bethel, staff or students, but rather a concern <br />for public safety and the sanctity of human life. Council Member Grant <br />encouraged the Vice President of Campus Services to review and to take action to <br />resolve safety issues at this intersection. lIe stated the first incident involvcd a <br />high school student, who was bicycling northbound on Old Snelling in the <br />westbound curb when a vehicle pulled out of Bethcl and proceeded to come across <br />Old Snelling onto the shoulder, where the bicyclist was. Council Member Grant <br />stated he spoke with the bicyclist, who happened to be his son. The second <br />incident occurred last week when Council Member Grant was proceeding <br />northbound on Old Snelling. Council Member Grant stated that a vehicle pulled <br />out of Bethel at 30-40 mph and proceeded to make a right hand turn on Old <br />Snelling. He noted the speed of the vehicle took it into the oncoming turn lane <br />and the direct traffic lane heading south. Had there been a car going southbound, <br />it would have been a head-on coJlision. lIe stated there seemed to be a safety <br />issuc at that particular intersection. He slated he did not believe it was inherent in <br />the design and was not saying anything against Bethel, but that that intersection <br />was a dangerous intersection and there were very serious driving errors made <br />there. <br /> <br />Council Mcmber Rem stated she had also heard from some residents that the <br />intersection had gottcn worse. <br /> <br />Council Member Grant stated his intent was to inform people to use caution at that <br />particular intersection and to raise awareness to the situation. <br /> <br />I <br />... <br />
