UNFINISHED BUISNESS 4-E

MEMORANDUM

DATE: January 23, 2024

TO: Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee

FROM: Kerri Seemann

SUBJECT: Chatham Trails 2024 Land Management Plan

Background

The initial goat browsing in Chatham Trails has had a noticeable impact on the young buckthorn in the
sections of the park where the goats were used. Those buckthorn saplings have been weakened. I believe
we can be successful in managing the buckthorn in this area if we not only continue the goat grazing, but
also take an aggressive multi-prong approach that removes the mature trees and fights the seedlings, as
well.

While wandering in the woods and around the edges of the wetland to see the effects of the goats, I also
discovered that the park is infested with purple loosestrife. That needs to be managed.

Update: PTRC is looking to form a workgroup for Chatham Restoration.

Action: Form a workgroup to help with planning and organizing restoration at Chatham. This includes
seeding, goat implementation, removal of buckthorn.
