Morrison
Clerk Administrator
City of Arden Hills
1450 West Highway 96
Arden Hills, Minnesota 55112
Dear Ms. Morrison:
SUlIJECT: S.P. 6204 (TH 10) at T.H. 96
I am writing as a follow-up to your August 25, 1987 letter to
Mr. Don Fashant and our recent phone conversation.
MnjDOT has a signal revision project presently scheduled for a March 1988
letting. That project will upgrade the traffic signals along T.H. 10
between Silver Lake Road and T.H. 96.
The revisions will include adding double overhead indications (one signal
. head above each of the through lanes) and moving the vehicle detectors
back further from the intersection. The doub Ie overheads wi 11 increase
the signal visibility to approaching motorists and the extended detectors
will reduce the likelyhood of the signal turning red when approaching
traffic would have a hard time stopping.
We are also considering building another left turn lane next to the
one inplace for southbound T.H. 10 traffic turning to eastbound T.H. 96.
It would then become a dual left turn movement which would reduce the
number of times traffic in the turn lane would back up out into the
through lanes.
We think these improvements will be very beneficial and have a larger
impact on traffic safety than would advance warning flashers. The
flashers that we have on a few highways in the metro area have not
produced a measurable reduction in accidents so there is no strong
justification for their use at this time. They have beenJ however,
very popular with motorists.
At the present time we think it is advisable to proceed with the signal
revisions that are planned. In the future, advance warning flashers
could be considered if there appears to be justification.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this
matter.
. ~/~
Michael L.
