One alleged race discrimination; the second
concerned an individual with a disability, who felt his layoff was
discriminatory, rather than lack of work; another concerned the refusal of
a local college to enroll a person of a different religion in their
nursing school; the fourth concerned refusal to rent to a person with
children. Two have been satisfactorily concluded, and two are still heing
. adjudicated.
Report from State Department of Human RiRhts
Kathy Hupola explained that she is a part of the "mobile unit"; as such,
she works with local commissions in education of commission members,
encouraging them to publicize the provisions of the State Human Rights
Act, and travels throughout the state (in areas assigned to her)
publicizing the bill and helping to organize human rights commissions in
towns where none exist.
Under the new Commissioner, Mr. Cooper, much of the backlog of cases has
been taken care of, and the department is running efficiently.
She plans to hold training courses in no fault grievance procedures
sometime between December and March; will send us the details as soon as
available.
A State Human Rights Day is planned, either December 5 or 9.
The State receives more cases dealing with age discrimination than any
other category, second largest number in sexual harassment, third racial
discrimination, and fourth, disability.
She stated that outreach and education are important so individuals do
know their rights; suggested this commission publicize the provisions of
. the State Human Rights Act through speeches in schools, television,
printed materials, etc.
-
