<br />DR:L.P'f <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS twenty-one years ago, on October twenty-fourth 1945, the <br />United Nations Charter came into force; and <br /> <br />-e <br /> <br />WHEREAS the General Assembly of the United Nations has called for the <br />annual observance of October twenty-fourth as United Nations Day, to be <br />celebrated by all Member Nations; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the President of the United States has officially proclaimed <br />October twenty-fourth 1966 as United Nations Day in the United States; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the citizens of this community are fully aware that our survival <br />requires worldwide cooperation; and that this country's highest hopes are in <br />harmony with the hopes and aspirations of peoples everywhere; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the United Nations was created to maintain peace in the world, <br />based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of <br />peoples, to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, and to raise the <br />standard of living for all men -- purposes which the United States of America <br />wholeheartedly supports; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the United Nations is the only international forum where nations <br />large and small can gather together in their common belief that the conference <br />table is better than the battle field; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the United Nations and its family of agencies has earned the <br />esteem and respect of the citizens of this country and of this city for its <br />practical achievements, which directly benefit each one of us in our daily <br />lives, and help us to fulfill the humanitarian obligations which Americans have <br />always tried to serve; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the success of the United Nations depends to a great extent on <br />the good will and support of a well-informed public: <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I,R~f.~.._t:, Mayor of ()~ft;.~ ~ <br />do hereby proclaim Monday, Octob~r 2, 966 as United Nations y, and <br />call upon all citizens of ~ I~ to observe that day in a spirit of <br />common purpose with the aims of the United Nations; I urge everyone, groups <br />or individuals, to participate in programs and activities designed to give <br />support and encouragement to effective U.
