~ ~~

'''J.'

WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM LOSSES .
NOVEMBER 20, 1990
P,~,GE HiO .

A. Master Meter Accuracy

The three (3) master ~eter installations between Arden Hills and
Roseville are routinely calibrated and certified annually. These
efforts should keep the meters recording as accurately as possible.

B, Commercial/Industrial/Charicable Meter Accuracy

The large C/I/C meters in Arden Hills have not been calibrated in many
years and their accuracy may be questioned. All metering systems can
be expected to "wear" during norrnal operation and will eventually
suffer some consequences of this "wear" over an extended periOd of
time. A representative of St. Paul Water Utility indicated that one of
their large meters is changed every six months due to wear on the
mechanical parts. This is an extrerne case, but Ihese larger meIers
should be calibrated regularly due to their impact on [he overall
system consurnption.

The Arden Hills water records frorn 1989 and the first half of 1990
indicate that the large users co~bine to consume 49 [0 55% of the total
,'later metered in the system. The tVienty two (22) ~: argest users .
accounted for 40 and 36% of the first and second quarter 1990 usage,
respectively.

Since the volume of water run through tI:ese rl,eters is quite large, a
small percentage of error could account for a significant difference,

C. Residential Meter Accuracy

Using the total consumption records and the number of connections, the
following per connection usage rates were calculated:

Period No. of Users Per Connection Usage
i~alions per day @ 90 days/quarter)

1089 2308 46
2089 2313 12
3089 2313 82
4089 2317 86
1090 2318 21
2090 2320 59

.
