CITY OF SHOREVIEW
4600 North Victoria Street, Shoreview, MN 55126 . Phone (612) 490-4600 . Fax (612) 490-4699
January 7, 1992
Honorable Mayor and City Council
City of Arden Hills
c/o Gary Berger, City Administrator
1450 West Highway 96
Arden Hills, MN 55112
Dear Mayor Sather and Members of the Council:
The Shoreview City Council has asked me to inform you about a motion
approved at their January 6th meeting requesting a meeting with the
Arden Hills CounciL One of the purposes of the meeting requested by
the Shoreview Council would be to consider the creation of a joint
council committee which would investigate new functions, programs, and
services of the two cities which might be merged, and whether or not a
full merger of the two communities should be explored. The Counei I
would also like to discuss any other matters of mutual interest.
. During the discussion of this motion, Shoreview council members made it
clear that they are not prejudging the merits of merging one or more
functions. However, they noted several factors which make the timing of
this proposal important: the interest of the Legislature in merging
local government functions; common social, economic, and geographical
factors; and the fact that both cities could approach such discussions
as equal partners,
Many similar discussions are occurring among cities throughout suburban
Ramsey County, both formally and informally. Some of the discussions
have proved useful and some have not. In any case, it was observed that
no one on our present Council has ever participated in a joint meeting
with the Arden Hills Council, which means it has been several years
since the governing bodies of t~e two cities have met together.
We have appreciated our good working relationship with you in recent
years and look forward to exploring additional shared efforts that might
be in the interest of the taxpayers of both communities. Please
let us know if you are willing to meet jointly with the Shoreview City
Council to discuss these and any other items of common interest. Thank
you.
Sincerely,
'0 1::<0 ~
0:.-u<< .
. Dwigh D. Johnson, City Manager
for the Shoreview City Council
