Iago, 1\cting Clerk Mm;n;strator SUBJECT: ~T1dation to Extend Sick Leave for Public WOrks Employee Fred Reed Enclosed are Sections 19-13 through 19-15 of the City Code relating to the Personnel Policy and defining employees' eligibility for extensions of sick leave. Based on the fact that Fred is a 10ng-tenn employee in good standing with the city and will shortly use all his remaining sick leave, and also that Fred and his family have encountered many hardships during his illness, staff rec:omrnerrls Council =nsider the following action: That Fred be required to utilize at least 100 hours of . vacation leave prior to extending any sick leave, which would leave approximately 40 hours of time f= his use in the event he returns to work at a future date. It is further recommended that Fred be granted an extension of sick leave for period of one month, and no further extensions be considered until such time as a progress report is received from his physician. Council should also determine if this employee is to be held accountable for the extended time and if repayment of the time extension is necessary ; this issue should be addressed for future =ences of this nature and staff will research how other communities address this matter . AC1'ION REl)UIRED: If Council con=s with the above recommendation, they should pass a motion directing the accounting staff to utilize the remainder of Mr. Reed's sick leave, utilize 100 hours of vacation leave, grant 29 hours of extended leave to this employee, and request a progress report on Mr. Reed's =ndition for presentation at the May 25 regular meeting. rYillCJI/ts M92-143 .
