I
BORING LOGS ABBREVIATIONS. NOTATIONS AND SYMBOLS
I (page 2 or 2)
I~C: In split-spoon (see notes) and thin-walled tube sampling, the recovered length (in inches) of sample.
In rock coring, the length of core recovered (expressed as percent of the total core run). Zero
indicates no sample recovered.
I REV: Revert drilling fluid
RQD: Rock Quality Designator in percent (aggregate length of core pieces 4' or more in length as a
I percent of total core run)
SA: Sieve analysis
I S.: Disturbed shear strength in pounds per square foot
S.: Undisturbed shear strength in pounds per square foot
-
SS: Standard split-spoon sampler (steel; lo/a' inside diameter; 2' outside diameter); unless indicated
I otherwise
TW: Thin-walled tube; number indicates inside diameter in inches
I VANE: Vane shear strength; L - Laboratory; F - Field
WC: Water content, as percent of dry weight
I W: Sampled soil appears wetlwaterbearing
WASH: Sample of material obtained by screening returning rotary drilling fluid or by taking a split-spoon
IIwAT: sample of material which has collected inside the bore hole after "falling" through drilling fluid
Water
I WH: Sampler advanced by static weight of drill rod and 140-pound hammer
WR: Sampler advanced by static weight of drill rod
I 94mm: 94 millimeter wireline core barrel
-200: Percent of material finer than #200 sieve
I ~: Water level indicated in boring
I NOTES:
1. In highly resistant material:
I . The standard penetration test consists of driving the sampler with a 140-pound hammer and
counting the number of blows applied in each of three 6' increments of penetration. If the
I sampler is driven less than 18', as permitted in ASTM-DI586, the blows for each
complete 6' increment and for each partial increment is recorded on the boring log. For
partial increments, the number of blows is shown over a bar (-) or slash (I) and the partial
penetration less than 6' is shown to the nearest inch below the bar or slash.
I . The length of sample recovered, as shown on the "REC' column, may be greater than the
{' distance indicated in the N column. The disparity is because the N-value is recorded
below the initial 6' set (unless partial penetration defined in ASTM:D1586 is encountered)
whereas the length of sample recovered is for the entire sampler drive.
I
