TWIN CITIES ARMY AMMUNITION PLANT (TCAAP)
SITE DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY
SITE DESCRIPTION:
The Twin cities Army Ammunition Plant (TCAAP) is owned by the
federal government and operated by Federal Cartridge Company.
TCAAP, approximately four square miles or 2,300 acres in size, is
located in Ramsey County in east central Minnesota.
SITE IllSTORY:
Construction of TCAAP began during the months leading up to ':
World War II. Groundbreaking began on August 28, 1941, and within
90 days most of the major buildings were either constructed or well
under way. Production of .30 and .50 caliber ammunition started in
February 1942 and continued for 42 months before the Installation
was placed in standby status. The work force reached its peak in
July 1943, when employment tocaled about 26,000 - the highest
number in the history of the Installation.
. TCAAP was reactivated in August 1950 in support of the Korean
Conflict and produced ammunition until December 1957 when it was
again placed in standby status.
In December 1965 the Installation was again reactivated during
the Viet Nam Conflict and produced 7. 62mm and 5.56mm ammunition
until approximately December 1976.
The Installation, therefore, was actively producing ammunition
during about one-half of the time since construction in 1941, or
approximately 22 of the 51 years. During the years of production,
Federal Cartridge has produced 16,513,000,000 accepted rounds of
small arms ammunition (50 caliber and smaller) for the U. 5.
Government.
Federal Cartridge Company ( FCC) , formerly known as Federal
Cartridge Corporation, was the prime operating contractor during
the construction and initial operation of the Installation. The
Installation's operation reverted to the U.5. Army during the
period from 1946-1950.
In 1950 FCC was reinstated as the prime operating contractor
and continues in that capacity to the present time. During its
years of operation, FCC has been a major employer for the area.
.
------
