The League strongly opposes legislation calling tor limits on terms for all
elected officehOlders. At the legislature, we have urged lawmakers to exempt city elected
officials from limits and have also noted overall OPPOSition to restricting constitutional
. guarantees of "universal eligibility" for serving in office.
The Senate Ethics & Campaign Reform Committee voted to not recolllmend approval of
legislation that would restrict eligibility of candidates seeking congressional, statewide and
legislative offices by limiting consecutive years that elected officials could serve. Proponents
of term limits have increased pressure on committee mcmbers to rcverse their opposition and
to force a vote on legislation on the floor of the Senate _ or to force House leadership to
allow a vote on term limits before the end of session.
Letters to the editor from local elected officials and residents are also needed to indicate
support for actions takcn by legislators. Please encourage concerned citizens Or community
organizations to submit lellers to local newspapers.
Encoumging support for state senators is particularly important, but also let members of the
Minnesota House of Representatives who represent your city know that local officials agree
that term limits unreasonably restrict the right of citizens to vote for candidates of their choice
and that impOSing such limits statewide seriously weakens important constitutional guarantees.
State Senators to contact:
Senator Roger Mae, District 2 Senator Ember Reichgott Junge, District 46
Scnator Doug Johnson, District 6 Senator John Marty, District 54
.
Enclosure
176 II JdiJ GLOO-0617-GI9:l31 83I11J NW jO 309iJ3l
GO'd SIO'oN 9I:SI
--
