.
,
~ CITY' OF ARDEN HILLS
MEM)R1lN[lllM
DATE: July 7. 1994
TO: Dorothy Person, City Administrator
FRCM: Brian Fritsinger, Ccmn.mi.ty Planning Coordina~
SUBJECl' : Arden Manor Swimni.ng Pool
At its May 23, 1994 meeting, the City Council directed Mro Husnik to
appear l:efore them to discuss the swirrming p::ol closure. City staff,
including myself, Dan Winkel and Cindy Severtson, subsequently have
rret with Mr, Husnik to discuss his available options.
On July 1, a rreeting was held with Mr. Husnik and the park JTI3Ilager,
Tern Holrrquist. At this rreeting, staff tl'ade several suggestions as to
amenities which could l:e considered as part of a trade-off for the
p::ol closure. These amenities included sand volleyball, expanded
~ basketball court, swings, slides, BBQ pits, horseshoes, shuffleJ:oard,
picnic area, new tot lot, etc. Staff informed Mr. Husnik that if he
desired to close the p::ol he w:JUld need to develop a proposal for
consideration by the City Council at their July 11 rreeting.
Due to the death of Mr. Husnik's partner, a fonnal proposal was net
presented to City staff. The last proposal, which was discussed over
the phone with Mr. Holrrquist, included the following:
l. Add 2 neM basketball h:xJps.
2, Rerrove existing tennis court.
3. Construct 2 new sand volleyball courts.
4. Improve drainage swale from pond to outlet pipe 0
5. Landscape existing pool area.
6. City continue to maintain the basketball and volleyball
courts.
With Ms. Severtson on vacation this past week, it was difficult to
assess the proposal, However, staff believes the Council should l:e
concerned that these replacement arrenities tl'ay net l:e of the type
which MJUld l:e available for use by all age groups. The park JTI3Ilager
~ has indicated that the pool is not available for individuals under age
14 , so this concern is not appropriate 0
tc:~ 7-I(-"j.~
