,
. CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEM)RANDllM
DATE: October 20, 1994
TO: Mayor and City Council
FRCM: Brian Fritsinger, Ca:lm.mity Planning Coordinato~
SUBJECT : MetroEast Deve1cp:nent Partnership
Recently, I tret with Debra Barkley and Jeff Raegeth of MetroEast
Developnent Partnership (MEDP). At this meeting, we discussed the
activities of the partnership and how the firm could assist Arden
Hills.
At this treeting, MEDP requested that the City of Arden Hills pledge to
be a member for the next tw) years. The cost of this membership is
$1000/yr or a total of $2000.
. At the titre I was hired by the City, Ms. Person and I discussed Arden
Hills potential involvement with MEDP. In fact, we had expected this
request to be made much earlier than now.
Attached you will find a copy of the organization's 1994-96 strategic
plan. Within this plan, it identifies most of the benefits that
trembership will give Arden Hills. These services range frcm business
leads to business consulting.
MEDP has been providing, at no cost to the City, these services for
the past several years. In one sense, they have been acting in a role
similar to that described by the City Council several months ago when
trey mentioned an economic developnent consultant. Other neighboring
ccmnunities, such as M:>unds View, are currently members of this
organization.
The only other economic developnent organization that I am aware of in
this area costs between $10-15,000 per year. I believe that for the
$1000 fee the assistance provided to the City can be well justified.
A portion of the Planning Consultant fees budgeted for 1995 could be
used for this membership. Staff W)uld reccmrend that the City Council
- consider approving the MEDP Membership.
