Even though some <br /> started small part-time police departments, the Sheriff's Department was I <br /> still left with much of the work. . <br /> I <br /> To insure police protection for the entire suburban county without <br /> additional cost to the county, the law enforcement serv2ces contract:. system I <br /> was proposed. A member of the County Board and the Sheriff went to Los I <br /> Angeles to study contract policing used extensively there, <br /> In 1360, a contract was signed by the County Board and the Cities of I <br /> Shcreview, Gem Lake, Little Canada, Vadnais Heights, and North Oaks, Arden I <br /> Hills '"as added in 1978 and White Bear Township in 1990, The agreement <br /> calls for the Couney Sheriff to provide manpower, equipment, direction and I <br /> supervision necessary to police the cities who in turn pay the complete <br /> cost. I <br /> The main advantage to I:.he cities in contracting is shar.ing services. and I <br /> thereby cost:s. Instead of a chief and his staff in each city, they share e <br /> I <br /> the cost of one sherif= and his scaff. The sharing eliminates duplication. <br /> L~creases efficiency i~ investigations and enforcemenc efforts are I <br /> ~~ <br /> consiscenc and not ~escric~ed by municipal boundaries. <br /> ----- <br />
