This is our second year and we are back as ready as ever to reduce youth access to tobacco products! I The North Suburban Tobacco Compliance Project is funded by Minnesota ASSIST. Minnesota ASSIST is a shared project between the Minnesota Department ofHea1th and the American Cancer Society; I Minnesota Division. and the communities of Minnesota. The North Suburban Tobacco Compliance Project is committed to reducing youth access to tobacco .- products. What our project is striving for is: Adherence to city ordinanceIstate law, open communication between the vendors and the communities, and the availability of educational materials to all vendors including those having trouble complying with the ordinance. I The program begins (October, 1995 to October, 1996) when all vendors have been given a formal letter stating that we are starting the compliance checks. The checks will be done by children between the ages of 14-17 that are accompanied by a police officer from each community. These teenagers are recruited I through local church youth groups and high schools. We have approximately 220 licensed tobacco vendors in the communities of Falcon Heights, Maplewood, New Brighton, North Sl PauI. RoseviI1e, Shoreview, and White Bear Lake. We will be doing a minimum of two compliance checks per licensed vendor. We have had great success with the Tobacco Project - the communities of Shoreview and New I Brighton had 100"/0 success laleS in their communities which means no person sold tobacco to a minor. We have much further to travel though before we reach our goals and we need your support to do it. I I would like 10 personally invite you, cily council members. and law enforcement officials from your communily to attend our quarterly meeting on July 16, 1995 at 5:30 p.nt. The meeting will be held at the White Bear Lake City Hall - Upper Cooference Room located at 4701 Hwy. 61, White Bear Lake.
