----..----.-
I
.
I. CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
I
DATE: September 7, 1995
I TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator
Dwayne Stafford, Public Works superintendenq7
I FROM:
SUBJECT: Ventilation System in the Public Works Maintenance Building
I Backl;:round
I Due to the increased safety awareness, it has been pointed out to us by several people, including
Don Zehm, a former OSHA Compliance Officer, that our maintenance building is in need of a
ventilation/make up air system.
I This system would remove exhaust fumes and other pollutants from the building, especially in
the winter and replace it with preheated outside air. Having worked a great deal in and around
I maintenance buildings the past 32 years, I am aware of what shop conditions can be when
warming up a fleet of plow trucks or tuning a diesel engine.
I- Apparently, this has been a problem since the building was constructed. As Council may recall,
our previous Public Works Superintendent had received several proposals for installation of
exhaust fans, The prices ranged between $3,000 & $12,000.
I Reviewing these proposals and discussing the situation with our Code Enforcement Officer,
Dave Kriesel and our Mechanical Inspector, Gene Pakoy, we have found these proposals to be
I inadequate.
I Bids
Therefore, we solicited bids for a complete job, which would meet all codes and OSHA
standards. The job would include all plumbing, electrical work, duct work, carpentry and
I everything, A lot of these things were not included in previous bids.
Res1;lonses
I Of the four (4) mechanical contractors we contacted, three (3) of them came out and did a
complete inspection of our maintenance building. All three returned bids ranging from $12,080
to $23,190.00,
I
I
.-
I
