..
. DESIGN CONCEPT ALTERNATIVES
b The design altematives for the Highway 96 Corridor have been separated into the following
categories in order to simplify the description of the alternatives and the evaluation of the
II alternatives.
. Cross-Section Alternatives
.. . Access Spacing Altematives
. Signal Location
. Regional Trail Location
II . Landscaping and Urban Design Treatments
. The alternatives for each category Can be evaluated on a corridor-wide basis or they can be evaluated
on a segment by segment basis with the segments being defined by the city boundaries, The
decision on whether to evaluate on a corridor wide basis Or on a segmental basis will depend on the
. category of alternatives and the roadway elements under evaluation.
CROSS SECTION ALTERNATIVES
II There are a number of elements which make up a the cross-section of a roadway including.
rI' . Through Traffic Lanes
. Turn Lanes
. Shoulders
II . Drainage Provisions
. Boulevard Area
.
II Several potential cross-sections were developed to illustrate the potential roadway width and right-
of-way needs for different cross-sections. These prototypical sections are shown on Figures and,
II Each of the cross-section elements are discussed below.
Throu!':h Traffic Lanes
II The first cross-section element to consider is the number of through lan-es required. The number of
through traffic lanes needed depends on the traffic demand_ The County's policy allows a maximum
II offour through lanes (two in each direction). The standard width for a traffic lane is 12 feet.
.
Turn Lanes
, A second consideration is the need for left, turn lanes. Left-tum lanes provide both a safety and
capacity benefit where left-turns are permitted. The County's fundamental guidelines requires that
I left-turn lanes be provided where left-turns are per:nitted_ The standard width for a left, turn lane is
,. -
- 49
,--
~~'
