19

Hydrant Winterizing
Red Top hydrants (43 hydrants citywide) are hydrants that have a plug at the elbow below grade. The
reason for the plug is normally because of a high level of ground water. The result of not checking a
plugged hydrant is the possibility of the barrel staying “wet” not draining, then freezing during the
winter months. A frozen hydrant barrel can cause damage to the hydrant and cause it to be inoperable
for use in the winter months.
Green Top hydrants (40 hydrants citywide) are similar to red top hydrants in the need to check for
ground water in the hydrant barrel, but these hydrants are not plugged. The ground water seeps into
the barrel and can cause the barrel to freeze during the winter months. PW staff measures the amount
of ground water in the barrel and adds the appropriate amount of a food grade anti-freeze. Like red tops
hydrants, if this process isn’t completed annually before the winter months the hydrant barrel could
freeze, damaging the hydrant and making it inoperable for use in the winter months.
Hydrant Winterizing Map
