AGENDA ITEM – 3D

MEMORANDUM

DATE: February 10, 2025

TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers

FROM: Jessica Jagoe, Interim City Administrator

SUBJECT: 75th Anniversary Planning Discussion

Budgeted Amount: Actual Amount: Funding Source:
N/A N/A N/A

Council Should Consider

Council should discuss and provide direction to staff on 75th Anniversary Planning.

Background

At the January 13th work session, the City Council discussed their 2025 ranking of priority topics
for scheduling at future work sessions. The number one ranking of the City Council was the
discussion for planning of the City’s 75th Anniversary.

For historical background, the name of the City is said to have come from billionaire Senator
Joseph Hackney's hobby farm, Arden Farms. Senator Hackney started the farm within the city
limits back in 1906. The City was originally part of Mounds View Township. When the
Township was organized, it included the present Shoreview, Arden Hills, New Brighton,
Mounds View and parts of North Oaks and St. Anthony. Arden Hills was incorporated on
February 14, 1951, in response to New Brighton's request for annexation of the area. Over the
next 20 years the boundaries of the City were formed through other annexation deals and land
trades, forming the City boundaries as it exists today.

Staff is looking for direction from the City Council on possible next steps for the 75th
anniversary planning. Items for discussion include consideration of the following:
• Formation of a 75th anniversary subcommittee (i.e. Councilmember(s), residents,
business owners, committee/commission members, staff, etc.) that plans and brings forth
recommendations to the full City Council
• Develop a 75th city logo
• Purchase promotional items (i.e. pens, clothing, magnets)
• Create a history book
• Special commemorative event
• Other ideas?
